Harmony Test Gender Accuracy Explained

The Harmony test is one of the best-known brands of NIPT in the UK. It is a blood test taken from around 10 weeks of pregnancy that analyses cell-free DNA from the placenta. As well as screening for chromosomal conditions, Harmony can report fetal sex โ€” which is why it often comes up in conversations alongside nub theory.

How Harmony Determines Sex

Harmony looks for Y chromosome DNA in your blood. If Y DNA is detected, the result is reported as male. If no Y DNA is detected, the result is reported as female. This is a direct DNA read, not a visual judgement of an ultrasound image.

Accuracy for Sex

Reported accuracy for sex determination with Harmony is typically around 98 to 99 per cent from 10 weeks, with the figure varying slightly by gestation and fetal fraction (the amount of fetal DNA in your sample).

A few things to know:

  • Girl results are very reliable when fetal fraction is adequate, because the absence of Y DNA is a clear signal.
  • Boy results are also highly reliable, though very rare cases of a vanishing twin or maternal chromosomal differences can complicate interpretation.
  • Earlier testing is possible on some versions but accuracy improves as fetal fraction rises with gestation.

For comparison, nub theory at 11 to 14 weeks has an accuracy of around 70 to 80 per cent in community use, because it depends on a clear scan and a skilled interpreter reading an angle. Harmony is a DNA test and far more accurate for sex.

When Harmony Can Be Less Accurate

Accuracy depends on:

  • Fetal fraction โ€” if there is not enough fetal DNA in your blood, the test may fail or be inconclusive. This is more common earlier in pregnancy and in people with a higher BMI.
  • Gestation โ€” testing before 10 weeks increases the chance of an inconclusive result.
  • Vanishing twin โ€” if one twin has stopped developing, Y DNA from that pregnancy can affect interpretation.
  • Recent transfusion or transplant โ€” rare but can affect results.
  • Maternal chromosomal mosaicism โ€” very rare.

What Harmony Does Not Tell You

Harmony does not provide a full chromosomal picture. It screens for trisomy 21, 18, and 13, and some panels add sex chromosome differences. It does not screen for every genetic condition, and it does not replace the 20-week anomaly scan, which looks at structural development.

Harmony vs Nub Theory for Sex

If your only question is "boy or girl", here is a quick comparison:

  • Harmony โ€” from 10 weeks, around 98 to 99 per cent accuracy, private cost typically 350 to 500 pounds or more.
  • Nub theory โ€” from 11 to 14 weeks, around 70 to 80 per cent accuracy, free if you already have a scan.

If you want certainty and are willing to pay, Harmony is the much stronger option. If you want a no-extra-cost prediction and can wait until your 12-week scan, nub theory is a fun guess but not a determination.

How to Get Harmony

Harmony is offered privately at many UK clinics. You usually need:

  • A confirmed intrauterine pregnancy.
  • A gestation of at least 10 weeks (sometimes a viability scan is included).
  • A blood draw, which the clinic arranges.

Results typically take around 5 to 10 working days depending on the lab.

Does NHS Offer Harmony?

Some NHS trusts offer a version of NIPT after a high-chance combined screening result, but the brand and scope vary. NHS NIPT may not routinely report fetal sex. If sex information is important to you, check whether your trust discloses it, or consider a private Harmony test that explicitly offers it.

The Honest Summary

Harmony is one of the most accurate options for finding out your baby's sex in the first trimester. If you want an early, high-confidence answer alongside chromosomal screening, it is hard to beat. If you only want a bit of fun at 12 weeks and cost matters, nub theory still has a place โ€” provided you treat the result as a prediction, not a fact.
