What Does a 6-Week Ultrasound Look Like?
If you're having a scan at 6 weeks, you might be wondering what you'll actually see on the screen. The answer is: not much that looks like a baby โ but there are important things the sonographer is looking for. Here's what to expect.

What You'll See on Screen
At 6 weeks, the ultrasound screen will show a dark area (the gestational sac) within the lighter tissue of your uterus. Inside the sac, you may see a small white circle (the yolk sac) and, if you're lucky, a tiny smudge next to it (the fetal pole). It won't look like a baby. It will look like a black blob with a tiny white dot inside. This is completely normal at 6 weeks โ your baby is only about 4-5mm long, roughly the size of a grain of rice.
The Gestational Sac
The gestational sac is the first structure visible on an ultrasound in early pregnancy. It appears as a **dark (anechoic) circle** within the uterus. The darkness is fluid โ the sac is filled with amniotic fluid that cushions your baby. The sac grows predictably in early pregnancy, so the sonographer can measure it to estimate how far along you are. A gestational sac is typically visible from about 5 weeks via transvaginal scan. By 6 weeks, it should be clearly seen and measure about 14-18mm in diameter.
If the sac is smaller than expected, you may be earlier than you think. If it's larger but empty (no yolk sac or fetal pole), the sonographer will arrange a repeat scan to check for development.
The Yolk Sac
The yolk sac is a small **white circle** inside the gestational sac. It looks a bit like a tiny fried egg (without the white) โ a small bright ring. The yolk sac provides nutrition to your baby before the placenta takes over at around 10-12 weeks. The yolk sac is usually visible from about 5+5 to 6 weeks. Its presence is an important milestone โ it confirms that the pregnancy is developing normally. If the sonographer sees a yolk sac, it's a good sign.
The Fetal Pole
The fetal pole is your baby. At 6 weeks, it appears as a **tiny smudge or thick line** next to the yolk sac. It's often only 2-5mm long โ barely visible. In some scans, it looks like a tiny curved blob. The fetal pole is usually visible from about 6 weeks, though it depends on your exact dates and the scan type. If the fetal pole is visible and measures over 7mm (CRL), a heartbeat should be visible. If the CRL is under 7mm, the heartbeat may not yet be detectable.
The Heartbeat
At 6 weeks, the heartbeat *may* be visible as a **tiny flicker** within the fetal pole. It looks like a rapid pulsing โ much faster than your own heartbeat. The heart rate at 6 weeks is typically 90-110 bpm. However, the heartbeat is not always visible at 6 weeks. If the fetal pole is very small or you're at the earlier end of 6 weeks, the heart may have only just started beating and may be too faint to detect. This doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong โ a repeat scan in 7-14 days will usually show a clear heartbeat.
What You Won't See
At 6 weeks, you won't see:- A baby-shaped figure: The fetal pole is too small to have recognisable features.
- Limbs: Arm and leg buds haven't formed yet.
- A face: No facial features are visible.
- Movement: The baby can't move yet at this stage.
- Gender: Far too early โ external genitalia haven't developed.
If you're hoping for a photo of a recognisable baby, 6 weeks is too early. You'll get a photo, but it will mostly show the gestational sac with a tiny dot inside.
What a Normal 6-Week Scan Shows
A normal 6-week scan typically shows:- A gestational sac of about 14-18mm
- A visible yolk sac inside it
- A fetal pole measuring 2-5mm
- Possibly a heartbeat (but not always)
- The pregnancy correctly located inside the uterus
If all of these are present, the scan is reassuring. Even if the heartbeat isn't visible yet, the other structures being present and correctly sized is a good sign. A repeat scan at 7-8 weeks will almost always show a clear heartbeat.
Frequently Asked Questions
### Should I be worried if I only see a sac at 6 weeks? Not necessarily. If your dates are slightly off, you may be 5+5 rather than 6+2. A yolk sac and fetal pole may appear within days. The sonographer will arrange a repeat scan to confirm.
Is the scan transvaginal at 6 weeks?
Almost always. At 6 weeks, the baby is deep in the pelvis and too small for an abdominal scan to see clearly. A transvaginal scan is standard at this stage.
Can I bring my partner to a 6-week scan?
Private clinics usually allow partners. If it's an NHS scan (for clinical reasons), check the hospital's policy โ it's usually fine.
